Rodrigo Bentancur has certainly done a fantastic job of whetting the appetite of Tottenham Hotspur supporters with a ‘spectacular‘ goal on international duty on his first appearance since completing his move to the Premier League.
It is an interesting move. It did appear that the 24-year-old was not a top target for Tottenham during the opening stages of the window. And he had not enjoyed the best season with Juventus in the months before his move.
However, he played a key role in the Old Lady winning three league titles. And you can understand why some Tottenham fans may feel that it is a real coup to land Bentancur for a fraction over £20 million.
Certainly, those excited about his arrival will only be more convinced that he could be a huge success following his latest display. Bentancur started for Uruguay in their World Cup qualifier with Venezuela on Tuesday.
He needed less than one minute to open the scoring in the 4-1 win. He smashed the ball home from the edge of the box. It was his first goal for his country.
And following the game, Uruguayan outlet El Pais handed him an 8/10 rating. Only one player achieved better.
“He started the game with a great goal when they were just 50 seconds in,” El Pais wrote. “In the rest, he played the ball judiciously and kept order. He was always the balance of the team and showed that he can perfectly be the rearmost midfielder in the absence of Vecino and Torreira; At times he went out to break a little more.”
Tottenham deal for Bentancur could have been hugely underrated
Of course, some Tottenham fans will reserve judgement until Bentancur has played for Antonio Conte’s side. But there is reason to be extremely optimistic.
He has not arrived for an eye-watering sum. But he can play in a variety of midfield roles. He can control the middle of the park, but he is also able to drive forward to try and make things happen in the final third.
So it should be no surprise if the deal for Bentancur is looked back upon as one of the shrewdest of this past window in the years to come.
