Tottenham Hotspur are seemingly making good progress over bringing Luis Diaz to N17.
Spurs have reportedly been in talks with Porto over signing the Colombia international winger.
On Tuesday afternoon, football.london reported that Spurs had enquired about Diaz’s availability.
Later on in the day, the likes of Sky Sports, The Guardian and The Independent claimed Tottenham had bid for Diaz.
On Thursday, Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol claimed Spurs had offered £46million and were still in talks.
In wake of the Adama Traore blow, speculation linking Tottenham with Diaz has proven positive amongst fans.
The 25-year-old has made a name for himself as one of the hottest talents in Europe over the past 12 months.
Diaz has registered 16 goals and six assists from 28 appearances in all competitions this season.
This includes 14 goals and five assists in the Primeira Liga.
Liverpool have also been linked with Diaz, but most of the current speculation surrounding the player is Spurs-related.
“He’s a player for the front three”
South American football expert Tim Vickery, speaking to Sky Sports, has sung Diaz’s praises.
However, he reckons the player would be a surprising signing for Tottenham.
Antonio Conte was reportedly planning to make Traore a right wing-back at Spurs.
Vickery “can’t imagine” Diaz agreeing to that, while his natural position is Son Heung-min’s position and doesn’t particularly need reinforcing.
“He’s very eye-catching,” said Vickery. “A winger, usually a left winger cutting in on to his stronger right foot.
“He’s got a goal in him. This I suppose is the way that Tottenham like to do business, sniffing around right as the window is closing and come in with cheaper offers than the club would ideally really like to accept.
“My surprise with this deal is that while he’s a very fine player, you look at the Tottenham line-up at the moment and if you’re going to spend that kind of money, is that the area of the team that really needs strengthening?
“He will be a player who I can’t imagine playing as a wing-back. I know Conte loves his wing-backs and we all know the Victor Moses story and so on.
“He could play there I suppose but I don’t think he’s really got any track record for that. He’s a player for the front three.
“As a player who operates from the left going in to the right, that’s Son’s position. That’s not a position you urgently need to reinforce. I’m a little bit surprised with that.”
