Arsenal and Newcastle United have both been linked with Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz this month.
The Daily Star has today reported that the Gunners are considering a move for the 23-year-old midfielder.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is a fan of Luiz, having worked with him during their time at Manchester City together.
Meanwhile, The Athletic has claimed that Newcastle have spoken about the Villa midfielder in transfer discussions.
Admittedly, with the Magpies now closing in on Bruno Guimaraes, Luiz is likely off the table for the St James’ Park club.
Yesterday, The Telegraph reported that an unnamed Premier League club has bid £32million plus £3million in add-ons.
This came after Villa apparently rejected a £30million bid amid a desire to tie him down to a new deal.
Luiz’s current contract expires at the end of the season.
Now, Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol has provided an update on Luiz, as Arsenal and Everton are currently “looking for a midfielder”.
“This is an interesting situation,” he said on The Transfer Show (28/1/22, 17:41).
“He’s got 18 months left on his contract but Aston Villa don’t want to sell him. There’s a good chance they will offer him a new contract.
“There are quite a few clubs interested in signing him.
“We’ve been told one club has made a bid of about £32m but Aston Villa do not want to sell him.
“We haven’t been told who that club is, but who’s looking for a midfielder in the Premier League?
“Arsenal and Everton are two clubs, but as far as Aston Villa are concerned they want him to stay.”
A £15million signing from Manchester City in July 2019, Luiz has been a top performer under Dean Smith and now Steven Gerrard, starting the last nine matches.
