Porto could yet make a late move to sign Bryan Gil, with Dharmesh Sheth telling The Transfer Show on Sky Sports that the league leaders hope to land the Tottenham Hotspur winger on loan.
Gil looks set to be on the move as Tottenham close in on bolstering their wide options. Dejan Kulusevski is reportedly on the verge of signing on loan from Juventus.
Gil has struggled during his time in North London. He is actually still awaiting the chance to make his full Premier League debut for Tottenham following his £21.6 million move. Of course, that deal also saw Erik Lamela move in the opposite direction.
Interestingly, it had appeared that the 20-year-old was on his way to Valencia. Fabrizio Romano claimed on Twitter on Sunday that a loan move to the Mestalla was agreed.
DROGBA DID WORSE THAN LUKAKU
Obviously, that would presumably go through once Kulusevski’s arrival is announced. But perhaps there is a small chance that he could actually end up moving elsewhere.
Sheth has since claimed that Gil could yet move to Portugal in the coming hours.
Luis Diaz drama unlikely to help Porto win race to sign Bryan Gil from Tottenham
Gil is not the first player Porto and Tottenham have looked set to discuss this month. Spurs, of course, made the first big play to sign Luis Diaz, offering up to £46 million.
However, Diaz ended up joining Liverpool on Sunday. That is despite Spurs subsequently making a last-ditch bid to stop the Colombian moving to Anfield (via The Times).
Gil is not an obvious replacement for Diaz. But he has the ability to play in a similar position. And he has been lauded at times since his move to Tottenham. Graham Roberts labelled him a ‘superstar‘ after one display.
So perhaps Porto have eyed a move in the wake of the 25-year-old leaving.
Tottenham may have little problem with Porto and thus, be open to loaning them Gil. But surely, the events surrounding the new Liverpool signing will not help Porto’s cause as they look to land Gil.
