Tottenham Hotspur “will” receive a new approach from Ajax for Steven Bergwijn, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Spurs winger was being linked with a departure from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this month.

Ajax reportedly made an opening €18m (around £15m) offer, which Tottenham rejected.

Since then, there hasn’t been much speculation on that front, particularly after his heroics against Leicester.

On 19 January, Bergwijn delivered a sensational performance off the Spurs bench against the Foxes.

The Tottenham winger scored twice in injury time to turn an all-but confirmed 2-1 loss into a 3-2 win.

It prompted plaudits from teammates, peers, pundits and fans.

It was the kind of performance that could well have convinced Antonio Conte to keep hold of Bergwijn.

However, with just over two days left in the transfer window, Ajax could potentially launch a late swoop.

Romano, speaking on Chris Cowlin’s YouTube channel, touched upon the situation involving Spurs, Bergwijn and the Eredivisie tabletoppers.

“I think many players have chances to leave the club,” he said.

“Not easy for Bergwijn because Ajax will try again, I’m sure.

“They’re still on point, they want Bergwijn, but they still have no agreement with Tottenham.

“Tottenham want €25m (around £21m) for Bergwijn, so let’s see what Ajax decide to do in the coming hours.”

Bergwijn’s display against Leicester showed just what he’s capable of when he’s on top of his game.

Admittedly, the Dutchman has struggled for consistency at times since joining Spurs.

But unless Bergwijn is actively pushing for a move, then Tottenham probably won’t let him go.

Earlier this month, Conte made it clear he rates the 24-year-old highly.

“He knows very well what I think I about him,” he told BBC Sport.

“When he is in a good physical condition I gave him a chance to show he is a good player.

“Bergwijn is a Spurs player. I count on him.

“He is a player with different characteristics to Sonny, Lucas and Harry

“He is a creative player, very good in one-on-ones, and a player we don’t have in our squad.”

There’s no point in letting Bergwijn go mid-season, so Spurs are likely to shrug off Ajax’s interest.
