Newcastle United are understood to have now registered their interest in Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett, but The Athletic reports that a deal currently looks to be unlikely.
The Magpies are continuing to improve their squad as the deadline looms. They have now made three first-team signings. And they have reportedly had a bid accepted for Brighton defender Dan Burn.
But he may not be the last signing through the door. The Athletic reports that they have now made an initial move to bring Targett in from Villa Park.
Targett has fallen down the pecking order with the Villans. Steven Gerrard has brought Lucas Digne in from Everton. And it was the Frenchman who started on the left of the defence against the Toffees before the winter break.
WAYNE ROONEY TO EVERTON IS A JOKE.
The Athletic does suggest however, that Newcastle signing Targett is currently looking unlikely. However, it is said to still be possible given how deadline day can play out.
Villa do have other options in that position. So they may perhaps find themselves open to substantial offers. And of course, Newcastle have been more than willing to spend big money in this window.
Targett definitely an upgrade as Newcastle eye late deal for Aston Villa player
Targett has probably not had the best time at Villa Park. But he previously enjoyed a very good couple of years following his move from Southampton following the Villans’ promotion.
He was named Villa’s Players’ Player of the Season last year. And former boss Dean Smith insisted that there was loads more to come from him. And he suggested that he is a ‘really top player‘ technically.
He would certainly have the potential to be a real upgrade on the options Newcastle do have in the left-back spot. So it will be very interesting to see if there is indeed a late twist and a move becomes likely.
