Newcastle United are hoping to confirm the signing of a new left-back in time for the upcoming clash with Everton, as a deal for Bruno Guimaraes edges closer to completion today.
The Magpies are on course to land the classy Brazilian midfielder. Multiple reports and outlets last night cited how a deal is in place for Guimaraes to move to St James’ Park for around £30m. He will become the club’s highest paid player, and a medical is set to take place in Brazil today.
However, it appears Newcastle aren’t quite done there. According to the Northern Echo, the club’s pursuit of two new defensive recruits is ongoing, with talks at an advanced stage to bring in Bayer Leverkusen left-back, Mitchel Bakker.
The Echo claims Newcastle are simply waiting for the green-light from Leverkusen to complete the deal for Bakker before Monday’s deadline. The German outfit are looking for a replacement for their man, and are holding fire on giving the Mags the go-ahead until then. It’s claimed Newcastle do have other irons in the fire if that deal stalls.
DROGBA DID WORSE THAN LUKAKU
Newcastle are also keen on landing a new centre-half before Monday as well. So far, their bids for Diego Carlos have proved fruitless. However, Eddie Howe is said to be determined to get a new centre-back into the building.
TBR’s View: A Big Few Days For Newcastle
This is the time for Newcastle to really get going. The signing of Guimaraes is a good one, and it could well entice other players to really think the club is serious about success.
The sooner that is announced for Howe and his staff, the better. It then gives PIF and Amanda Staveley the full weekend to work hard at other deals. Bakker is a smart signing at left-back. He’ll bring quality, stability, and improvement to the ranks.
A centre-back is needed, of course. But there is still time for the Mags to act.
