Lyon plan to try and sign Alexandre Lacazette in the summer having failed in their attempt to land the Arsenal striker during the January transfer window, according to a report from L’Equipe.
Lacazette looked to be the one Arsenal forward with no question mark hanging over his immediate future on deadline day. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, of course, joined Barcelona.
His exit leaves Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah as the only natural striker options available to Mikel Arteta. And Nketiah certainly attracted interest last month.
But it would appear that Lacazette did indeed have the opportunity to leave. L’Equipe reports that Lyon wanted the 30-year-old in January. And they are now eyeing a move for the summer five years after he left the Ligue 1 side for the Premier League.
Lacazette is out of contract in the summer. And the report notes that Lyon have made contact with his entourage in recent weeks.
Striker overhaul needed at Arsenal likely to only push Lacazette closer to the exit
Lacazette has an opportunity to make a big impression over the coming months. He is now set to play a huge role over the rest of the season for Arsenal.
Should he impress, the Gunners will surely have conversations over keeping him. He has also been described as ‘different class‘ as a leader by Jack Wilshere. Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher labelled one of his displays this season ‘outstanding’.
However, there is absolutely no doubt that Arsenal need at least one new goalscorer in this summer.
Clearly, the intention will be to sign a marquee name. They were linked with the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Alexander Isak during the January transfer window. Both players will command huge fees should they move at the end of the season.
And with that, Lacazette is surely more likely to move on despite the opportunity that lies ahead of him in the next few months, simply as Arsenal need to land a new first-choice option.
