Newcastle United have signed Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes so far this month.
And Dan Burn is seemingly edging closer to a return to the north-east.
Earlier today, we shared footage from Keith Downie showing Burn arriving at Newcastle for his medical.
However, Newcastle failed to get the Hugo Ekitike deal over the line.
Watford Hiring Roy Hodgson Is A Joke.
The Magpies apparently made a bid of £25million, rising to £33million, for the Reims striker.
Despite Ekitike’s club reportedly accepting the offer, the player has decided to stay put.
“The player has now had time to think about things,” Keith Downie said on Sky Sports (31/1, 16:23).
“His feeling is that it’s too big a decision for him to make at this late stage.
“He will not be moving to Newcastle.”
Now, Dean Jones has suggested that the Magpies could potentially mount a late swoop for Duvan Zapata.
Newcastle were linked with the Atalanta striker earlier in the window.
Colombian outlet El Tiempo even claimed personal terms were agreed regarding a £105,000-a-week contract.
Last week, 90Min claimed that talks between the Magpies and Zapata’s club were still going on.
Atalanta apparently rejected Newcastle’s opening offer to sign the Colombian on loan.
The Magpies were reportedly willing to pay Atalanta an £8million loan fee with an obligation to buy for another £30million – including bonuses – if they stay up.
Atalanta reportedly turned down the offer because they want the obligation to kick in regardless of Newcastle’s Premier League status.
On Sunday, the Daily Star – via the Daily Express – claimed Newcastle had drawn up a new offer for Zapata.
This would reportedly involve an £8million loan fee before spending £35million to sign him permanently in the summer.
“It’s going to cost a fortune”
Now, in wake of Ekitike opting to stay put, Jones has tipped the Magpies to potentially make a late move for Zapata.
However, he reckons Newcastle would have to pay a huge fee to sign the striker at this stage of the window.
“They had kept that Zapata deal on in the background,” Jones told GiveMeSport.
“So, I guess it’s feasible they could turn to that but it’s going to cost a fortune to sign him now, at this stage, to get him out of Atalanta.
“They were already trying to push up the price. So, with hours left, I can’t imagine they’re going to get him at a good price at all. So, not sure where they’ll turn here.”
