The Joint Negotiating Council of Ogun state has vowed to go on industrial action if the state government refuses to pay the minimum wage and its arrears this April after the Corona Virus pandemic.
The State Chairman of the the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), Comrade Folorunsho Olanrewaju disclosed that an agreement was signed with the state government stating that the minimum wage will commence from February 2020.
“We signed an agreement based that the minimum wage will commence from February 2020, whereas we will be having an arrears of one month of January . But government in his wisdom decided that the payment will not commence February but by March as soon as we are getting our salary for March which was equally endorsed by the Honourable Commissioner for Finance, the head of service as well as the SSG whom the aide to the governor whereby we are told that we must get the salary by March”.
He added that “the salary was paid last week, up to part of this week, we are dissapointed that the state government refused to pay the minimum wage.”
“Hence they went back into paying the old salary which was 18,250, and the agreement we had on fourth of February was 30,500 the minimum”.
“We are highly disappointed that the government has not in their wisdom acceded to what we agreed and this is giving us a sort of sleepless night and we believe that since the government has disappointed the workers of the State, it is as good as we don’t seems to have any confidence in this government.”
In his words “Because of the Corona virus that is in place and some other palliative measures that the government is doing , we believe the government will give us by April and if it is not paid by April, as well as the arrears of January, February and March, then there might be fireworks somewhere.”
The Chairman stressed that the combined organized Labour, NLC, JNC, TUC , are equally writing to that effect as a sort of the correction to the anomalies of the government.
“We want the payment to commence by April and if it’s not done with the reminder we are given, we believe that we still want to add colour to it. Whereby we ask them that we might likely go on strike .
“Though we are not on strike but we are on holiday because of the Corona Virus that is devastating the world now”.
“May be shortly after we resume, after the disappearance of COVID -19 we believe that if the government refuses to call us for a meeting then we might decided to go on strike”, he concluded.
