The Arsenal hierarchy may have decided to walk away from an agreement ahead of a potential loan for Arthur Melo, but Calciomercato reports that the Juventus midfielder is continuing to push for a move.
It had appeared that Arthur moving to the Emirates in the January transfer window had become unlikely.
Reports on Wednesday had suggested that Edu had actually reached an agreement with Juve after weeks of speculation.
The Athletic claimed that the Arsenal director had agreed an 18-month loan deal. The Gunners would then have the option to make the Brazilian’s move permanent for £33.4 million.
However, the Arsenal hierarchy subsequently decided against a move for Arthur once the offer was presented to them by Edu. It was claimed that they were reluctant over the longer terms.
The Athletic did not rule out a move. However, they suggested that something would have to give on one side for talks to start up again.
But it seems that Arthur is determined to make that happen. Calciomercato reports that the player and his agent are continuing to push for a move.
It would appear that they need Arsenal to compromise. Calciomercato suggests Juventus are awaiting a better offer. They are said to have a replacement waiting in the wings, in Nahitan Nandez.
And Arthur hopes that the pressure will tempt Arsenal to improve their bid.
Arsenal decision on Arthur could go down to the wire
Of course, it is foolish to rule out almost anything in the transfer window. But it did appear that Arsenal may have to look elsewhere for a midfield signing.
An agreement was ready to go. And with that, Juve are surely likely to dig their heels in from here.
But Arthur still wants the move to Arsenal. And Juventus are leaving the door open. They have a replacement in mind.
Arsenal need a midfield signing before the window shuts. And Thomas Vermaelan previously labelled Arthur an ‘incredible‘ player.
So there is definitely scope for a late twist.
