Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe reportedly wants to persuade the Magpies board to increase their bid for Dan Burn.
The Magpies have made two signings so far in the January transfer window – Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.
In addition, Newcastle appear to be closing in on Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes.
However, the Magpies haven’t managed to land a new centre-back just yet.
This is a priority position for Newcastle, who have struggled in defence this season.
The Magpies have conceded the second-highest amount of goals in the Premier League this season.
Newcastle reportedly made a £8million bid for Burn earlier this week, which Brighton rejected.
However, The Guardian claims Howe could persuade the Magpies board to increase their offer for him.
Although Graham Potter wants to keep him, a £10million bid could turn Brighton’s head, added the report.
The Newcastle boss reportedly thinks the 29-year-old could help his side avoid relegation.
Burn hails from the north-east and grew up supporting Newcastle.
The 6ft 7in defender is a regular starter for Potter’s side and has been in great form recently.
Although Burn has suffered from some injuries this term, he has clocked up 13 Premier League appearances.
“Anyone that criticises someone like Dan Burn doesn’t understand football, ultimately,” Potter told The Athletic last February.
“I wouldn’t listen to them. It’s irrelevant to me. Dan just gives his best every day.
“He’s playing at the highest level. He’s a fantastic example of what a top athlete should be in terms of it’s not going to go well every day but he recovers, he fights; he fights for the team.
“He’s everything you’d want from a professional footballer, so just let the ‘experts’ talk.”
In addition, Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah remains very much on Newcastle’s radar, added The Guardian.
Other reports have claimed the Magpies are still pushing for a left-back amid links with Mitchel Bakker and Rogerio.
The next few days will be crucial for Newcastle and they’ll surely be busy trying to get a few more deals over the line.
Howe has overseen an upturn in form and results, with the Magpies now unbeaten in three league games and just a point from safety.
