Tottenham Hotspur missed out on a few deals this week but none were quite as gut-wrenching for fans and the club than seeing Liverpool swoop in and take Luis Diaz from under their noses.
The Reds are set to announce the signing of Porto star Diaz and the winger has been pictured with the Liverpool shirt on social media this morning. An announcement, then, would seem imminent.
However, things might have been different all-around had Tottenham and Daniel Levy got their way. Spurs believed at one point they had got their man, with Porto accepting an offer from the Londoners. However, over the course of 24-48 hours, things changed drastically.
The Telegraph has this morning shared details on the transfer deal. In the report, it states that Levy was aware of Liverpool’s attempts to hijack the deal a full 24 hours before media reports surfaced on Friday. Further, when it became apparent there was little he could do to stop things, The Telegraph claims Levy considered reporting Liverpool owners John Henry and Mike Gordon to the powers that be.
Interestingly, it’s claimed that FSG were delighted with way their own club went about their business.
Tottenham are now frantically working to get transfer deals done ahead of Monday. Deals for Douglas Luiz, Dejan Kulusevski, and Rodrigo Bentancur are all being considered.
TBR’s View: Levy Beaten At His Own Game
Daniel Levy is known for being an astute and hard-nosed businessman in football. But he’s been completely curve-balled here by FSG and he’s rightly fuming.
Diaz is the sort of signing who Tottenham fans would have simply loved to have seen. Liverpool are getting a serious talent, and a player who could make a huge difference in the final third.
For Levy, Paratici, and Tottenham, they now need to get their heads back in the game and focus. New signings are a must before Monday, or Antonio Conte will be left scratching his head.
