Arsenal opted against signing a striker in the January transfer window, despite being linked with a number of high-profile names as the window dragged towards an underwhelming conclusion for the Gunners.
The Gunners missed out on signing Dusan Vlahovic to Juventus. The Serbian was the club’s main target but the Turin club swooped late in the day to snatch him from Arsenal’s grasp. Beyond that, Arsenal also considered a move for Alexander Isak, but on deadline day, he was deemed simply too expensive.
However, that decision to not pay the £70m+ release clause for Isak could come back to bit them. That’s because both Chelsea and Manchester United are now said to be keen on the Swedish star. The Mirror reports how the Premier League pair are both keeping tabs on Isak. A summer battle, then, could be on the cards.
For Arsenal, missing out on Isak to PL rivals would sting. It would be reminiscent of the Vlahovic transfer. And for Edu and Arteta, it’s something they need to try and prevent happening.
Watford Hiring Roy Hodgson Is A Joke.
Isak, who Gary Lineker lauded as ‘exceptional’ in Euro 2020, could well become the name of the summer window before we even get there.
TBR’s View: Arsenal Need To Get Their House In Order
Arsenal fans could probably forgive the club for not spending big in January. Well, just. They allowed a fair few players to leave and didn’t get any replacements.
However, the same won’t wash in the summer, surely? Arsenal need a striker, for one. Likewise, they also need players in other positions if they’re serious about a top four push on a regular basis.
Isak, it seems, is a player the Gunners really like. Therefore, they simply need to make sure a deal is in place. That means not giving the likes of Chelsea and United a sniff. If they don’t, then Gunners fans will be asking serious questions.
