Bimbo Ashiru; The Discreet Saviour of Ogun State Economy By Damilola Adelesi 


Otunba Bimbo Ashiru has proven himself beyond doubts of his vast knowledge in resuscitating of a dying system. Ogun State is a state blessed with resources capable of awakening the sleeping glory of Nigeria.

It is indeed undisputable fact that the quantity and quality of any nation’s professionals defines its economic development because such persons possess the skills and intellectual capacity necessary to shape the course of growth of any nation. It is also a statement of fact that advanced countries of the world have their professionals and leaders who have helped such nations attain the peak they celebrate.

Since inception of a country called Nigeria, there has been unrelenting effort on the part of government to bring the country out of the backwoods of underdevelopment. This fear has brought about ‘vision 2020.’ Definitely, the vision aims at moving the Country into one of the 20 most industrial powers in the world by Year 2020.

Otunba Bimbo Ashiru is an embodiment of the above-mentioned qualities of governance. In the history of Ogun State government, Ashiru served as a two terms Commissioner for the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in which such record has never existed in the history of Ogun state Ministry of Commerce.

Bimbo Ashiru is calm, immeasurably knowledgeable, organized and dedicated. Ashiru is the main man that has led the most structured, and deeply managed Ogun State economic activities through the emergency of over 120 companies in the state.

As the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, the business of the state developed beyond imagination with over 1. 279.84% increase in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state. More than 120 new companies established their presence in Ogun state with a cumulated investment profile of about N691.77 billion in 2014, compared to N377 billion in 2013. This even placed Ogun state in first position in Nigeria, according to the Manufacturer Association of Nigeria (MAN). During his time, approximately 75% of Foreign Direct Investments in Nigeria within 2011 – 2016 came into the gateway state.

Recently, the World Bank Group in its 2014 Nigeria Report ranked Ogun state as one of the best five most business friendly states against the 36th position in its 2010 report. He also facilitated the creation of a One-Stop Shop investment Centre (OSSIC) which inhabits within the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to assist potential investors with procedures for investment and documentation processing. The organisation till now dwells deeply on economy drive, generation of fund for the state, due process, rural and urban transformation, localization/domestication of contract award, in term of mines and other land resources, the re-engineering and re-organization of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Ogun State.

Otunba Bimbo Ashiru is a factor with passion to develop society and help people around him, and this helped him clinch the appointment as the representative of the Awujale of Ijebuland on the Ijebu Development Initiative on Poverty Reduction (IDIPR).

The young technocrat has helped Ogun State be among the successful states in Nigeria, with the introduction of ‘cashless policy;’ skyrocketing the Internally Generated Revenue of Ogun State.

He has distinguished himself in this field and represented his people favourably to the best of his ability, he was also on the Technical and Communication Committee of the 17th Nigerian Economic Summit (2011). The young man is the face that establishes contacts and woos foreign investors into the country, especially to the state because he believes that he is the man that up to that task of inviting investors into the state to establish in their business of their choice without rancour and anguish.

Ashiru is an intelligent man, graduated with a degree in Marketing, Purchasing and Supply, and owns a Masters’ Degree in Strategic Management. With this experience, he entered the services of the then Chartered Bank in the year 1989. In a successful profession that has spanned two decades and has ported him to various institutions, he has served in various capacities of Management (Head, Private Banking Unit; Branch Manager; Head, Institution and Professional Banking; Regional Coordinator; Country Director, Personal and Business Banking; Director, Corporate Affairs and Corporate Social Investment; until his last position of Group Head, Public Sector with Stanbic IBTC Bank). He was the pioneer head of the department.

Otunba Bimbo Ashiru was born in Ijebu-Ode to the renowned Ashiru family. His father, late Pa Simeon Adeyemi Ashiru, was a distinguished Ijebu statesman while his mother ‘Omo’ba (Princess) Moradeun Ashiru, is from the Fidipote Royal family of Ijebu-Ode and the ruling house of Owu-Ijebu.

In his unquenchable quest for quality leadership and knowledge he is also a reputable member of the Metropolitan Club, Ikoyi Club 1938 and a member of the Ijebu Heritage Group and Ijebu Renaissance Group. He is a fellow of the Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria, National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (FNIMN) and Chartered Institute of Commerce of Nigeria.

In recognition of his selfless service to society and humanity as whole and having distinguished himself as a true son of Ijebu land and an astute banker of repute. Otunba Bimbo Ashiru was presented with the royal title of Otunba Adeona Fusigboye of Ijebu land by Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebu Land, Oba (Dr. ) Sikiru Kayode Adetona CFR.

His overwhelming performance later earned him a recognition by the Ogun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun-East, who recently motivated Ashiru to vie in the governorship contest og Ogun State for 2019. Among others that showed readiness for the project are Obas in Ogun State, APC stalwart, youths, Women Leaders, political loyalists, among others.

Ashiru is indeed a blessing to Ogun State, a successful product of Ijebu, who will bring back the glory to Ijebu, if not now, definitely later.
