Tottenham saw off Brighton in FA Cup action last night as Antonio Conte saw his side put in an exciting performance in front of the Spurs faithful on Saturday evening.
A double from Harry Kane and a deflected effort from Emerson Royal ensured Spurs saw off the Seagulls, who had briefly got back into the game via a Yves Bissouma effort. However, it was all in vain as Conte’s men saw the game out and could, arguably, have scored more goals.
But while Spurs’ attacking play was to be admired, there was a lot to be said for some of the defensive efforts on display too. And in particular, the performance of a certain Cristian Romero.
The impressive defender is back from injury and will be key for Conte and this Tottenham side. And last night, he was dominant at times, as the stats from Whoscored.com back up.
Romero was a big-money signing by Fabio Paratici and at the time, with £42.5m deemed a hefty pay-out for a relatively unknown defender on these shores. However, he is gradually showing everyone what he’s all about.
Last night, Romero was all-action. Per Whoscored, Romero a team high five clearances and four tackles. He also added in two interceptions to the mix, again, a team high.
On the ball, too, the Argentinian was superb. He completed 97% of his 35 passes – again, a team high – while he was successful in completing 75% of his four attempted long-balls. Certainly, it was the performance of a defender who very much looks to have a bit of everything.
The challenge for Romeo and his teammates now is to stay fit and keep firing. With Harry Kane finding form and Heung-Min Son also returning, this Spurs side suddenly looks a bit better. And if Romero can keep up this level, then Kane and co won’t have to worry about how their side are coping defensively.
